The shelter is the same everywhere. The homes people make of it are not.
The number of refugees in the world is at an all-time high, and the pictures we see of them are almost always pictures of hardship. So for What Makes a Home we didn’t send a documentary photographer. We sent Björn Wallander, who usually photographs the homes of the very rich for Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, along with Ci Demi and Ali Haj Suleiman, to shoot shelters in Brazil, India, Chad, Türkiye and Syria the way you would shoot any home: the light, the colour, what people have chosen to put on the wall.
The result is a rare and intimate glimpse of the resilience with which people have built dignified homes, even in the toughest of circumstances.
